Hospitality Industry Design Preferences Research Study

We surveyed and interviewed an audience of forty, with ages ranging 21 to 65, to find out how design impacts the consumer behavior.

In this research sample of forty, 90% of respondents go out to restaurants/bars/cafes at least once per week.

Close to 30% report going out more than 3 times a week.

77% of these respondents said “yes” when asked if they search for "trendy" restaurants/bars/cafes. The definition of “trendy” is “very fashionable or up to date.” This term is used in the hospitality industry to define a venue with a certain level of uniqueness or aesthetic.

This means if you transform your venue into an aesthetically pleasing experience, you’ll most likely see better success in Search Engine results, as consumers searching for this type of experience will find you more easily since the Search Engine will place your venue higher in the results page of a search. This is greatly favorable, as Forbes reports that “The first five results receive 67.6% of clicks.

We studied the top 3 attributes for each category, and the décor and aesthetic of the venue consistently ranked highly, with 64% of respondents voting it in their top 3 most important attributes, with price and quality as the other 2 top attributes most frequently selected.

This shows that you’re selling more than just food, coffee or a beer. You’re selling an experience, so make sure that experience is unique and memorable to make you stand out from the competition!

90% of respondents are willing to spend more at a restaurant/bar/cafe for a unique vibe and aesthetic experience.

This means that the decor of your venue can provide real monetary value.

65% of respondents reported that they take pictures "often" or "every time" when they go out.

The more aesthetically pleasing your venue is, the higher the probability that your consumers will want to take pictures there.

This increases your chances of receiving "organic" social media attention from "user-generated-content."

This is the social media equivalent of "word of mouth" marketing, as your consumers will create a good perception about your place among their followers, expanding your venue's reach on social media.
